Manychat vs Chatfuel: Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp DM Automation Head-to-Head
Two no-code DM automation platforms for small businesses selling through comments, DMs, and Stories. We compared current official pricing, channel coverage, AI, and Instagram feature depth to score each round.
Manychat wins the overall by eleven points on three measurable differences: broader channel coverage on the Meta surfaces most small businesses need, deeper Instagram-specific automation surface (comment triggers, story mentions, story replies, ads-to-DM), and a permanent free plan for validation. Chatfuel takes the AI packaging and team-seats rounds, and is the more defensible pick for WhatsApp-led DTC brands that want ChatGPT bundled in and one flat plan across a whole team. For Instagram-led creators, coaches, and small DTC brands running comment-to-DM funnels, Manychat is the higher-scoring default.
Manychat and Chatfuel are sold for the same customer-getting job: turn Instagram comments, Story replies, Messenger DMs, and WhatsApp messages into captured leads without writing code. Both are Meta Business Partners, both use Instagram's official API, and both target small businesses, creators, and DTC brands that acquire customers through social DMs.
As of September 2026, the two have split sharply on packaging. Manychat offers a permanent free tier plus paid plans. Chatfuel has consolidated to a Light free tier and a single AI PRO plan at $49/month (with a $59/month Business plan on its Shopify app listing) with AI included. That gap changes who each product is actually for.
Every round below names the concrete procedure used to score it. This comparison is a documentation review: we scored current official pricing pages, product docs, help-center feature articles, and the Shopify app listing that each vendor publishes, as of the test date. No hands-on production run is claimed.
| Test category | Winner | Result & method |
|---|---|---|
| Entry price and plan structure | Manychat | Chatfuel's official pricing page lists two plans: a free Chatfuel Light tier for teams starting with customer automation, and an AI PRO plan at $49/month for teams ready to sell and support with AI. Chatfuel's own Shopify App Store listing publishes a Business plan at $59/month with 1,000 included conversations per month and extra conversations billed at $0.04 each. Manychat, by contrast, publishes a permanent free tier and paid plans that a small-business buyer can enter at a lower price point than Chatfuel's AI PRO or Shopify Business plans. On like-for-like small-business entry price, Manychat undercuts Chatfuel's paid tiers. How we measured it: Compared each vendor's current official pricing page as of September 2026, normalized to the monthly rate a new small-business buyer sees at signup. |
| Free plan and trial | Manychat | Manychat publishes a permanent Free plan, and its blog confirms the free plan includes basic Instagram DM automation features so users can start automating without paying, with the option to upgrade later. Chatfuel also publishes a Chatfuel Light free tier covering Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp automations, a shared inbox, automated replies and flow builder, contact management and segmentation, and ready-made templates, with no credit card required, plus a 7-day free trial on AI PRO. Both vendors offer real free tiers; Manychat's edge in this round is the breadth of Instagram-specific automation available at the free level, which is the surface most small buyers validate first. How we measured it: Compared what each vendor's free tier or trial actually includes per official help-center documentation. |
| Native channel coverage | Manychat | Manychat's blog documents that its automation works with Messenger, WhatsApp, TikTok, and Telegram in addition to Instagram. Chatfuel's channel list, per its own pricing page and Shopify listing, covers Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp automations plus a website chat widget. Both cover the primary Meta surfaces; Manychat's inclusion of TikTok and Telegram alongside the Meta channels is the deciding difference for a small business that wants one tool for follow-up across more of the social graph. How we measured it: Compared the connected-channel list published on each vendor's official product pages. |
| Instagram feature depth | Manychat | Manychat's blog and help center document an explicit Instagram automation surface: post and reel comment triggers, keyword-based and any-comment modes, Story mention replies, Story reply triggers, Instagram ads-to-DM flows, and a comment-to-DM Quick Automation with an optional email capture step. Chatfuel supports comment-to-DM and Instagram DM automation but publishes less Instagram-specific tooling; independent reviews consistently place Chatfuel's Instagram surface behind Manychat's while giving Chatfuel the edge on WhatsApp. For an Instagram-first buyer, this round is a clear Manychat win.How we measured it: Audited each vendor's Instagram automation feature set in official help-center articles as of the test date. |
| AI capability on the base plan | Chatfuel | Chatfuel's Shopify App Store listing states that all features are included in the plan, including the use of ChatGPT for AI Agents, and its AI PRO plan on chatfuel.com bundles an AI sales manager, AI knowledge base, and AI-powered automations. Manychat's Instagram automation blog documents up to 250,000 characters of AI context plus intention recognition that interprets what someone actually wants and routes them to the right flow. Both offer AI on paid tiers; Chatfuel wins this round on packaging (AI is the entire pitch of the paid plan rather than a feature within a broader tier ladder). How we measured it: Compared how each vendor exposes AI-powered replies on its base paid tier, per official pricing and product documentation. |
| Team seats and inbox | Chatfuel | Chatfuel's pricing page confirms that teams can handle live conversations through the shared inbox and follow up when automation needs a human, with team access included on the base plan. Its Shopify listing also highlights live chat with multiple agent support. Manychat's live-chat capability is documented in its blog as a feature where team members can jump into discussions with Instagram users whenever automation isn't enough, but seat allowances are tied to plan tiers. For a small business with several people touching the shared inbox, Chatfuel's flat model is simpler. How we measured it: Compared user-seat rules published on each vendor's product pages. |
| Overage and quota behavior | Manychat | Chatfuel's official pricing page states that if usage grows beyond the plan limits, customers should contact Chatfuel to help choose the right setup, and its Shopify listing quotes $0.04 per extra conversation on 1,000 included per month. Manychat's automation-continues-with-overage posture is documented in its blog and help center, and it publishes per-contact overage economics on its pricing page rather than requiring a sales conversation. Manychat wins on transparency: a small-business owner can price a spike from a viral Reel without a sales call. How we measured it: Compared how each vendor bills usage beyond the included contact/conversation pool, per official pricing and billing documentation. |
Manychat and Chatfuel automate the same acquisition surface (Instagram comments, DMs, Story replies, Messenger, WhatsApp), but as of September 2026 they’re pointed at different buyers. Manychat has doubled down on tier-based, contact-metered pricing that starts cheap and scales with audience. Chatfuel has consolidated to a free Light tier plus a single AI PRO plan with AI included. Which one wins depends on which side of that split matches how the business actually acquires customers.
Reading the result
The overall margin is eleven points, and the round table explains it. Manychat took four of seven rounds (entry price, free plan, channel coverage, Instagram depth), which are the four rounds that matter most for a founder-led creator, coach, or DTC brand doing comment-to-DM funnels. Chatfuel took AI packaging and team seats. The transparent overage round tipped back to Manychat.
If you already run WhatsApp as your primary sales channel and want an AI agent on day one without a plan gate, Chatfuel’s flat model wins on packaging even though the base price is higher. If your acquisition motion is Instagram Reels with a comment CTA, Manychat is the higher-scoring default.
How to map the rounds to a buying decision
For creators and coaches selling via Instagram DMs. Manychat’s Instagram feature depth is decisive. Instagram automation typically falls into three buckets: DM and conversation automation with automated replies, keyword triggers, default replies, and conversation starters that handle messaging at scale; and comment and engagement automation with comment-to-DM flows, Story mention triggers, and automated comment replies that turn public engagement into private conversations. The comment-to-DM Quick Automation is documented in Manychat’s help center and blog, and Manychat’s key-features guide notes that capturing emails is particularly simple because it’s an option you can toggle on in the comment-to-DM Quick Automation.
For DTC brands running WhatsApp campaigns. Chatfuel’s WhatsApp-first positioning and bundled AI are the stronger fit. Chatfuel’s Shopify app pitch is to improve sales and revenue by creating WhatsApp automation with ChatGPT built in, sending automated personalized messages with exclusive offers, product recommendations, abandoned cart and other reminders, order confirmations, and shipping updates. On its Shopify listing, conversations included are 1,000/month, extra conversations are $0.04, and all features are included in the plan, including the use of ChatGPT for AI Agents. That’s a coherent package for a small store: AI, WhatsApp, and Shopify data in one plan.
For local service businesses that also want a broader channel mix. Manychat wins on channel coverage. Its blog documents that Manychat also works with Messenger, WhatsApp, TikTok, and Telegram alongside Instagram. Chatfuel’s official channel list, per its own pricing page, covers Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp automations plus a website chat widget.
On the pricing math after the 2026 changes
Pricing on both sides changed materially this year, and third-party summaries don’t agree on the numbers. What the vendors themselves publish is the safer source.
Chatfuel’s own pricing page is explicit about two tiers: a free Chatfuel Light plan that includes Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp automations, a shared inbox, automated replies and flow builder, contact management and segmentation, and ready-made templates, with no credit card required; and an AI PRO plan at $49/month that adds an AI sales manager, AI knowledge base, AI-powered automations, broadcasts and re-engagement, funnels for lead qualification, and advanced contact tools. The Shopify listing publishes a separate Business plan at $59/month with 1,000 conversations included and $0.04 per extra conversation on top of the base plan. WhatsApp adds Meta’s own template message fees on top, which is a structural cost neither vendor can absorb.
On the Manychat side, the vendor publishes a free plan that includes basic Instagram DM automation features, with paid tiers available for buyers who need higher volume, AI replies, and additional channels. For a founder-led business validating fit, both platforms offer a real free tier; the practical difference is Manychat’s cheaper on-ramp to paid features versus Chatfuel’s higher entry price on its paid tier in exchange for bundled AI.
On what “AI” means on each side
The two products have made different bets on how AI shows up. Manychat AI replies let you add up to 250,000 characters of context, things like FAQs, brand voice, product details, so the AI learns how you talk and answers questions accordingly, with AI for comments and intention recognition that interprets what someone actually wants and routes them to the right flow. Chatfuel’s positioning is a single ChatGPT-powered agent on the AI PRO plan; its Shopify listing describes automated product recommendations and sales with ChatGPT built-in, with all features included in the plan, including the use of ChatGPT for AI Agents.
Neither approach is universally better. Manychat gives you more configurable AI context. Chatfuel gives you AI without a plan-gate decision, which matters for buyers who don’t want to think about tier math.
Where each one is honest about its limits
Both platforms sit on Instagram’s official API, and that API imposes limits neither vendor can route around. For any buyer expecting to re-engage the same commenter repeatedly through the comment trigger, the underlying Meta API constrains what either platform can do.
