The Verdict

Ahrefs Free (formerly Ahrefs Webmaster Tools) is the strongest starting point for almost every small-business owner: it runs the same 170+ check Site Audit crawler as paid Ahrefs on domains you verify, at no cost. If paid monitoring, keyword tracking, and client-ready reporting matter, SE Ranking Core at $103.20/month billed annually is the best value all-in-one. Sitebulb Pro at ~$35/month (annual) wins for prioritized visual explanations; Semrush Site Audit (bundled with Pro at $139.95/month) wins when a buyer also wants the Semrush data stack; Screaming Frog's $279/year desktop license wins for deep technical crawls; SEOptimer's $29/month tier wins only when white-label PDFs matter more than audit depth.

A small-business site with broken canonicals, missing meta, orphan pages, or failing Core Web Vitals quietly caps how many prospects ever reach it. The job of an AI SEO audit tool for a founder or a small marketing team is narrow: crawl the site, flag what Google actually cares about, and hand back a prioritized fix list the owner (or a freelancer) can ship this week.

We evaluated six platforms owners actually shortlist for that job. The comparison is a published-pricing and documentation review against each vendor's own site audit, pricing, and feature pages, not a hands-on crawl benchmark. Every number below is sourced to the vendor page that supports it. Scores reflect our editorial rubric; they're not a measured crawl benchmark.

The test suite · 4 measured metrics

Each tool was scored by reading its official product, pricing, and documentation pages as of October 2026. The evaluation is a desk review of published pricing and documented features, not a hands-on crawl benchmark. The weighted score reflects fit for an owner or a one-to-thirty-person team buying one audit tool to find and fix the issues keeping their site from ranking.

Published pricing transparency

We required a public, self-serve monthly or annual price for the plan that includes site audit, read from the vendor's own pricing page. Tools with 'contact us' entry pricing, or where the lowest advertised tier does not include site audit, score lower. Weighted 25%.

Audit depth and coverage

Count of distinct SEO issue checks the vendor documents on its site audit page (e.g. '170+ issues,' '300+ hints,' '115+ checks'), presence of JavaScript rendering, and whether Core Web Vitals / performance are collected in-audit versus pulled from an external API. Documentation review only. Weighted 30%.

Small-team fit

Scored on three documented capabilities: a usable free tier or no-card trial, plain-language prioritized recommendations in the UI, and how much setup the vendor's own quickstart requires. Tools priced or packaged primarily for agencies or enterprises score lower here even if the audit itself is strong. Weighted 25%.

True monthly cost at entry

Effective monthly cost at the lowest paid tier that includes site audit, converted to a monthly figure using the vendor's published annual price when billed annually. Normalized so lower cost scores higher. Free tiers that meaningfully cover the audit job score at the top of the scale. Weighted 20%.

The Ranking
1RANK
Ahrefs Free (Webmaster Tools)
Ahrefs
The paid Ahrefs Site Audit crawler, free for domains you verify. For most small-business owners this is the right first, and often only, tool.
90

Ahrefs Free (previously Ahrefs Webmaster Tools) gives verified site owners access to Site Audit, Site Explorer, and Web Analytics at no cost. The Site Audit crawler checks for 170+ SEO issues, tracks a Health Score over time, and runs on the same engine as the paid Ahrefs product. There are two trade-offs: the free tier only covers domains whose ownership you can verify (no competitor crawling), and crawl frequency is weekly rather than daily on paid plans. For a founder or small team auditing their own single site, that's close to the entire job for $0.

Strengths

  • Free for verified site owners, no credit card, no trial expiry
  • Same 170+ issue Site Audit engine as paid Ahrefs
  • Includes backlink profile and organic keyword data for the verified domain

Weaknesses

  • Only works for domains whose ownership you can verify
  • Paid Ahrefs starts at $129/month for Lite if you need competitor audits or daily data

2RANK
SE Ranking Core
SE Ranking
Best-value paid all-in-one: site audit plus rank tracking, keyword research, backlinks, and white-label reporting at roughly half the price of Semrush or Ahrefs.
84

SE Ranking's Core plan runs $129/month or $103.20/month billed annually and bundles the full SEO toolkit (rank tracking, keyword research, backlink monitoring, site audit, and AI search visibility) into one subscription. The audit crawls up to 250,000 pages per month on Core with JavaScript rendering, and includes 10 projects and one manager seat. It's the right pick for a founder or small agency who wants ongoing monitoring (not just a one-off audit) at a predictable price, and who values white-label reporting via the $69/month Agency Pack add-on. Audit depth trails Sitebulb and Screaming Frog but is enough for most SMB sites.

Strengths

  • Full SEO toolkit on one plan, verified at $129/mo or $103.20/mo annual
  • 250,000 audit pages per month and 2,000 daily-tracked keywords on Core
  • 14-day full-access free trial with no credit card

Weaknesses

  • Audit documents ~115+ checks across 13 categories, fewer than Sitebulb or Ahrefs
  • White-label reports require the +$69/month Agency Pack add-on

Sitebulb (Desktop Pro)
Sitebulb
The clearest, most educational audit output in the field. Pro desktop at roughly $35/month billed annually crawls up to 500,000 URLs per audit.
82

Sitebulb is a desktop-first SEO crawler built around prioritized 'Hints' with plain-English explanations and visual crawl maps. The Lite desktop plan runs $18/month ($13.50 billed annually) and caps audits at 10,000 URLs; Pro runs $42/month ($35 billed annually) and lifts the cap to 500,000 URLs per audit with the full 300+ Hint set. Every plan includes JavaScript crawling and GA/GSC/Sheets integration. Trade-offs: no permanent free tier (14-day trial only), no keyword or backlink data, and desktop crawl speed that depends on the owner's machine. For a founder who wants to understand why each issue matters, nothing in this list communicates it better.

Strengths

  • 300+ prioritized Hints with plain-English explanations and visual crawl maps
  • JavaScript crawling included on every plan, including Lite
  • Pro crawls up to 500,000 URLs per audit for ~$35/month billed annually

Weaknesses

  • No permanent free tier, only a 14-day Pro trial
  • Desktop only on these tiers; Sitebulb Cloud starts around £95/month (~$120)

Semrush Site Audit
Semrush
Deep audit bundled inside the Semrush suite. Only worth the $139.95/month Pro plan if the buyer wants Semrush's broader keyword, competitor, and reporting data as well.
78

Semrush Site Audit crawls up to 100,000 pages per month on the Pro plan at $139.95/month ($117.33/month billed annually), scoring the site across on-page, technical, social, and off-page SEO and surfacing Core Web Vitals and AI search visibility inside the same report. The free Semrush account caps Site Audit at 100 pages per month, enough to try the interface but not to audit a real site. The classic Pro/Guru/Business ladder is still live, while Semrush is transitioning to a parallel Semrush One lineup starting at $139 for an SEO tier and $199 for Starter. For a buyer who only wants an audit tool, Semrush is overspec'd; for a buyer who also wants Semrush's keyword, competitor, and content tooling, the audit comes along for free.

Source: Semrush ↗

Strengths

  • 100,000 audit pages per month on the Pro plan
  • Audit sits inside a full keyword research, competitor, and content suite
  • Core Web Vitals and AI search visibility surfaced in the audit report

Weaknesses

  • Entry price of $139.95/month (or $117.33/month annual) is high if audit is the only use case
  • Free account's 100-page audit limit is a demo, not a usable tier

Screaming Frog SEO Spider
Screaming Frog Ltd.
The desktop crawler every technical SEO owns. $279/year for unlimited crawling, 500 URLs free, and a steeper learning curve than anything else in this list.
76

Screaming Frog SEO Spider is a desktop crawler billed as a per-user annual license: £199 (listed as $279) per year, with volume discounts starting at five seats. The free version crawls up to 500 URLs with core checks. The paid license removes the cap and unlocks JavaScript rendering, custom extraction, scheduling, API integrations, and saved crawls. For a founder willing to learn a power tool, no tool in this list returns deeper raw crawl data per dollar. The trade-off: Screaming Frog is deliberately neutral about priority. 4,000 missing meta descriptions and three 500 errors get the same weight, so triage sits with the operator.

Source: Screaming Frog Ltd. ↗

Strengths

  • $279/year per license for unlimited crawling (bounded by local machine memory)
  • Free version crawls 500 URLs with no time limit or email capture
  • JavaScript rendering, custom extraction, and API integrations on the paid tier

Weaknesses

  • Desktop only; crawl size is bounded by the operator's RAM
  • Issues are reported without a priority order, triage is on the user

SEOptimer
SEOptimer
The budget audit-and-white-label tool. $29/month entry, embeddable audit widget on the top tier, and shallower crawl data than the rest of the field.
68

SEOptimer runs quick audits across 100+ on-page and technical data points and is priced for freelancers and small agencies: DIY SEO at $29/month, White Label at $39/month, and White Label & Embedding at $59/month. The entry tier includes 4 website crawls per month, 20 tracked keywords, and 25 keyword searches; the top tier adds the embeddable audit form, which lets an agency capture leads from its own site. The platform is cost-effective for client-facing PDFs and lead-gen widgets but isn't a deep technical crawler and doesn't replace a full SEO suite. Reviewers consistently flag it as audit-and-reporting-first, not research-first.

Source: SEOptimer ↗

Strengths

  • Lowest entry price in this list at $29/month on DIY SEO
  • White-label PDF reports from the $39/month tier
  • Embeddable audit widget on $59/month tier doubles as a lead-capture asset

Weaknesses

  • Only 4 website crawls per month on the DIY SEO plan
  • Audit depth, keyword, and backlink data are thinner than the paid competitors above

Analysis

The ranking above reflects a documentation and pricing review as of October 2026. The decisive separator at the top of the table isn’t raw crawl depth (Screaming Frog, Sitebulb, and the Ahrefs crawler are all competent on that axis) but how well the output lands with a non-specialist buyer, and how much the buyer has to spend before the audit is usable.

Why the free Ahrefs tier wins the top slot

For a founder whose first SEO question is “what is actually wrong with my site,” the right starting point is the one that returns the most prioritized data for $0, on a crawler that isn’t a demo. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools costs nothing and covers one verified site per account, and the Site Audit in it uses the same crawler and the same issue detection engine as Ahrefs’ paid Site Audit tool, scanning every page on the domain and flagging technical SEO issues across seven categories with an overall Health Score and specific recommendations for each issue.

Ahrefs has rebranded the product; in their words, “Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is now Ahrefs Free, we moved beyond ‘Webmaster Tools’ to reflect modern teams and give broader free access to Ahrefs’ tools,” and the product and the free access are the same; only the name changed, and the old URL still resolves.

The paid Ahrefs ladder exists for a different buyer, the one who needs daily data and competitor audits, and paid Ahrefs starts at $29/month for Starter and $129/month for Lite, adding Keywords Explorer for keyword research on any topic, Site Explorer for any domain (competitor research), Rank Tracker for position monitoring over time, Content Explorer, and daily (not weekly) data updates. For most owners auditing their own site, the free tier is enough.

Where SE Ranking actually wins

SE Ranking is the best value when the audit is one job on a longer list. SE Ranking’s live subscription page lists Core at $129 monthly or $103.20 per month billed annually, Growth at $279 or $223.20, and Enterprise with custom pricing, verified on 5 October 2026.

Core includes 10 projects, 1 user seat, 2,000 daily-tracked keywords, and 250,000 audit pages per month; Growth includes 30 projects, 3 seats, 5,000 keywords, and 2 million audit pages; white-label reporting is available via the Agency Pack add-on at $69/month, annual billing only. That’s a lot of toolkit for one subscription. Competing suites either cost more per month or paywall white-label into higher tiers.

The audit itself isn’t the deepest in this list, SE Ranking audits up to 2,000,000 pages per project, renders JavaScript so client-side content is actually seen, runs 115+ checks across 13 categories, and exposes a Website Audit API whose read endpoints cost zero credits, but 115+ checks across the right categories is plenty for an SMB site, and the daily rank tracking and keyword research are a genuine complement to that audit output.

Where Sitebulb beats everything on explanation

Sitebulb is where the audit becomes legible to a non-specialist. Sitebulb costs from $13.50/month for the Lite desktop plan (billed annually; ~$17.50 billed monthly), ~$35/month for Pro desktop, and from £95/month (≈$120) for Sitebulb Cloud, which scales past £20,000/year for large teams.

Sitebulb Lite is the entry desktop plan at ~$13.50/month billed annually: it caps every audit at 10,000 URLs, runs 100+ of the 300+ audit checks, and limits crawl speed and content extraction; JavaScript rendering is included on every plan, Lite included, so that’s not the upgrade. One caveat for an owner comparing it against the free Ahrefs tier: there’s no permanent free plan, only a 14-day trial.

Semrush and Screaming Frog are specialists

Semrush is the right call only when the buyer wants the whole Semrush suite. The Pro plan runs $139.95/month ($117.33/month annual) with 5 projects, 500 keywords to track, 10,000 results per report, 100,000 pages per site audit, keyword research and position tracking, competitor analysis basics, and no content marketing tools. The free account technically includes an audit, but Site Audit on the free tier is limited to 100 pages per month, which is a demo rather than a working audit for a real small-business site. Note too that the 2026 Semrush One lineup prices the entry SEO tier at $139 monthly or $117.33 billed annually, Starter at $199 or $165.17, Pro+ at $299 or $248.17, and Advanced at $549 or $455.67, a pricing transition worth checking against the vendor’s live page before buying.

Screaming Frog is the opposite trade-off: deep, cheap, and demanding. Screaming Frog SEO Spider costs $279 per user per year (£199 / €245), with volume discounts from five licences; the free version crawls up to 500 URLs with most of the checks enabled but no saved crawls, JavaScript rendering, custom extraction, scheduling, or API integrations, and there’s no monthly plan.

Save and re-open crawls, full crawl configuration, JavaScript rendering, custom extraction, scheduling and CLI, GA4 / Search Console / PageSpeed / Ahrefs / Moz APIs, and crawl comparison all require the paid license. That’s a bargain for a technical SEO; it’s a hard sell to a non-specialist owner who wants a prioritized to-do list rather than a spreadsheet.

When SEOptimer makes sense

SEOptimer is a narrower product than the rest of the field: fast audits, white-label PDFs, and an embeddable lead-gen widget. SEOptimer starts at $29 per month for the DIY SEO plan, with a free version and free trial available; the $39 White Label plan adds branded PDF reports and crawling multiple websites, while the $59 White Label & Embedding plan includes embeddable audit forms and lead capture.

DIY SEO ($29/month) includes unlimited website reviews, 4 website crawls per month (for 1 website), 20 keywords for tracking, keyword research with 25 searches per month, backlink research with 25 site lookups per month, task and progress management, and 1 user. It’s the right answer when white-label and lead-gen matter more than crawl depth, and the wrong answer when the buyer wants to understand the technical state of the site.

What to pair this with

An audit tool is one piece of a getting-customers stack. Teams working on organic reach often pair their audit cadence with content distribution and link-building workflows. Frequently Asked Questions

Q.What's the best free SEO audit tool for a small business?

Ahrefs Free (formerly Ahrefs Webmaster Tools) is the strongest free option. It runs the same Site Audit crawler as paid Ahrefs, 170+ documented SEO issue checks, on domains whose ownership you verify, with no credit card and no trial expiry. For a founder auditing their own site, pairing it with Google Search Console covers the audit job without a paid tool. The limit is competitor research: you can only audit sites you verify.

Q.Do I need Semrush or Ahrefs if I only want a site audit?

No. Both paid suites start at $129.95-$139.95/month and bundle keyword research, backlinks, and competitive data that an owner may not use. Ahrefs' own Site Audit is available free via Ahrefs Free for verified sites, and SE Ranking Core at $103.20/month billed annually includes site audit, rank tracking, keyword research, and backlinks in one plan at a lower price than either Pro tier.

Q.How much does Screaming Frog cost in 2026, and is it worth it for a small business?

Screaming Frog's SEO Spider is a per-user annual license at £199 (listed as $279) per year, with volume discounts starting at 5 seats. There's a free version that crawls up to 500 URLs. For a founder willing to learn a power tool it offers the deepest raw crawl data per dollar in the category, but it reports issues without a priority order, so a less technical owner will usually get more leverage from Ahrefs Free, SE Ranking, or Sitebulb.

Q.What's the difference between Sitebulb Lite and Pro?

Sitebulb Lite is the entry desktop plan at ~$13.50/month billed annually; it caps every audit at 10,000 URLs and runs roughly 100 of the 300+ Hints. Pro at ~$35/month billed annually lifts the cap to 500,000 URLs per audit and unlocks the full Hint set, 50+ accessibility checks, scheduled audits, and customized PDF reports. JavaScript rendering is included on both.
