Every tool ran the same workload for two weeks on the same connected mailbox: a mixed Gmail account receiving roughly 120 messages per weekday across sales replies, newsletters, calendar invites, cold pitches, vendor threads, and customer questions. We ran a fixed set of 40 real reply scenarios (customer questions, vendor follow-ups, scheduling, polite declines) through each tool's draft feature after letting it learn from the sent folder for one week. Two blinded raters scored each draft on task completion, factual accuracy against the thread, and tone match to a reference set of the account owner's past sends. Weighted 25%.
Twenty natural-language queries were run against each tool's AI search (for example: 'find the signed MSA from Acme in Q1' or 'what did the design team decide about the pricing page last month?') and scored on whether the correct thread was returned in the top result. Thread summarization was scored on 15 long threads (average 22 messages) against a human-written summary. Weighted 20%.
Scored on the presence and quality of features that decide whether the tool changes daily work: auto-labels or bundles, natural-language filter or rule creation, snooze and follow-up reminders, calendar and scheduling handling, CRM integrations (HubSpot, Salesforce), meeting-notetaker capture, MCP or API access, and shared/team inbox support. Each capability was scored present-and-good, present-but-weak, or absent. Weighted 20%.

What the scores measure
Triage accuracy carries the same weight as draft quality because a fast reply to the wrong message isn’t a productivity gain. We scored triage against a human-labeled ground truth over 400 incoming messages, not vendor-cited accuracy positioning, because every AI email vendor advertises its categorization quality against its own best-case inbox. Independent labeling on the same inbox is the only way to compare across tools whose taxonomies differ.
Where the field separates
Superhuman and Shortwave lead the table on the AI-native axis; Fyxer AI leads the overlay category; SaneBox and Missive are the specialists. The gap between the top two and the rest widens on the drafting task once the tools have had a week to learn writing style. Superhuman’s Auto Drafts and Shortwave’s Ghostwriter both produced voice-matched replies that needed only light editing on roughly two-thirds of the 40 test scenarios; Fyxer AI matched them closely on tone but trailed slightly on longer replies where the draft had to reason across the full thread history. Missive’s Magic Reply is competent but noticeably behind on nuanced or long-form drafts, and SaneBox doesn’t draft at all. Its zero on that metric is a category difference, not a failure.
