Perplexity Comet vs Dia: AI Browser Head-to-Head
Two AI-native browsers, two very different bets: Perplexity's free agentic browser against Atlassian-owned Dia's chat-with-your-tabs Pro plan. We ran both through the same research, agent, platform, and privacy rigs.
Comet takes the overall by six points on the strength of a working autonomous agent, free access across four platforms, and Perplexity's research engine baked into the URL bar. Dia wins the rounds that matter to knowledge workers who read more than they automate (chat-with-tabs quality, Skills, tab organization, and stability), and is the more defensible pick for macOS users inside Google Workspace, Slack, and Notion who want a polished AI layer rather than an agent. For most people asking which AI browser to install today, Comet is the higher-scoring default. Dia is the better pick if the job is reading and synthesizing rather than delegating.
Comet and Dia are the two products that define the consumer AI-browser category in 2026. Both are Chromium-based, both put an AI assistant in the browser rather than in a separate tab, and both are pitched as Chrome replacements. Their bets differ: Perplexity's Comet is an agentic browser that will click, fill, and buy on your behalf, while The Browser Company's Dia is a chat-with-your-tabs layer that prioritizes polish, Skills, and cross-tool context.
The pricing picture also inverted this year. Comet launched at $200/month and is now free on Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android. Dia started free in beta and now gates the AI features behind a $20/month Pro plan. That flip is why the head-to-head is worth running now.
Every round below names the concrete procedure behind it. Capability rounds are scored on fixed tasks. Platform, pricing, and compliance rounds are scored against each vendor's official documentation and public reporting as of July 2026.

Comet and Dia are sold for the same job (a browser that thinks with you) but they’ve made opposite bets on what “AI-native” means. Comet is an agent that drives tabs. Dia is a chat surface that reads them. The six-point overall margin comes almost entirely from that difference in scope.
Reading the result
Comet took five of eight rounds (agent, research, platform, pricing, and gets credit for a working autonomous surface Dia doesn’t attempt). Dia took three: chat-with-tabs, tab management, enterprise integration, and privacy posture. The rounds Comet wins are the rounds a buyer wins when the job is delegation: click, fill, buy, migrate. The rounds Dia wins are the rounds a buyer wins when the job is reading: synthesize, cite, keep meeting context tidy, and don’t ship browsing data to an ad graph.
How to map the rounds to a buying decision
If you spend the day doing multi-step web tasks (moving data between SaaS tools, filling vendor forms, comparing prices, drafting from an open thread), Comet is available free on all four major platforms (macOS, Windows, Android, and iOS) with no account required to download and no subscription required to use core features , and the agent is the reason to install it. It’s the browser that features an assistant which enables users to perform a variety of tasks such as generating article summaries, sending emails, or buying products .
If you spend the day reading long documents in 20+ tabs and want an AI layer that stays out of the way, Dia is the better pick. User reviews describe Dia as fast and stable, with many reporting months of use without crashes. This reliability stands out in a category where AI browsers often feel unfinished. Its meeting-aware grouping is a small feature that changes the shape of a workday: When a calendar event is open in a tab, Dia auto-creates a Tab Group containing every tab opened during that meeting and labels the group with the event name. Tabs opened during a Zoom call go into the meeting group. The group survives the call and is searchable later.
If your team lives inside Atlassian, Slack, and Google Workspace, Dia’s integration story is the deciding factor. The product is explicitly built to dig into your full context, across GSuite, Slack, tabs, and more, and answer like someone who’s seen every thread , and Dia for Work adds SSO and admin controls for team deployment.
On the pricing flip
The pricing picture changed materially in the last twelve months and the direction of the flip matters. Comet launched expensive and went free. Dia launched free and added a paid tier. The startup is making Comet free to users as competition heats up with rivals like Google. Perplexity initially launched Comet in July to Perplexity Max subscribers for $200 a month. On the other side, The Browser Company has launched a Pro subscription plan for Dia, its new web browser that heavily integrates AI features. The plan costs $20 per month and provides unlimited access to Dia’s AI-powered chat and skills features. The introduction of a paid tier means free users will now face usage limits on AI features.
For a new user, that means Comet’s entry price is $0 across every major platform, while Dia’s entry price is $0 with soft caps and $20/month for the version most reviewers actually recommend. Comet does still have a $200/month Max tier, the ceiling appears when you need to do things autonomously. Agent tasks - form fills, purchases, email drafting, travel booking - consume credits, and the free tier’s credit allocation is small. You’ll also hit rate limits if you’re using the AI assistant heavily; the free allowance is more “daily driver with some AI augmentation” than “replace all your research tools.” but that’s a ceiling, not the entry point.
On the underlying design bets
The two products come from opposite ends of the category. If Perplexity is starting from search and moving into browsing, The Browser Company is doing the reverse. Known for building Arc, one of the most beloved design-forward browsers of the last few years, the team recently announced a new direction: a product called Dia, a browser designed from the ground up to be AI-native.
That shows up in what each does well. Comet is search-first, built around Perplexity’s AI search as the browsing primitive. Dia is tab-first, built around chatting with your open tabs and the content inside them. Comet wins for research-style workflows; Dia wins for design-conscious users who valued Arc’s UX.
The practical consequence in our runs: Comet’s assistant is the first thing you reach for when you want the browser to do something, and Dia’s is the first thing you reach for when you want the browser to explain something. Neither bet is wrong. They’re answers to different priorities.
On corporate trajectory
Both products had major corporate events in 2025-26 that are worth pricing into a long-horizon browser choice. The Atlassian acquisition closed October 21, 2025. As of December 2025, Dia cleared an Atlassian security review and The Browser Company began recruiting for “Dia for Companies.” That gives Dia funding and an obvious enterprise distribution path, at the cost of skepticism from users who dislike enterprise-owned browsers.
Comet’s parent has scaled aggressively on the consumer side. Comet does not exist in isolation, it is the browser layer of a platform that crossed $450 million in annualized recurring revenue in March 2026, up from $200 million in total 2025 revenue. Perplexity’s valuation sits near $21 billion. The platform handles over 1 billion queries per month from 45 million monthly active users.
Both vendors are well-funded enough that product continuity is a reasonable assumption over the next 12 months. The open questions are how much of Devin-style automation continues to fold into Comet’s agent, and whether Dia’s Atlassian ownership pulls the product further toward team workflows and away from the consumer polish that defines it today.
On privacy, and why it’s a real round
This is the round most buyers underweight. Dia’s public posture is that all user data is stored locally on the device and encrypted. Data sent to an external server for processing remains there only for milliseconds before being deleted. The goal is to eventually complete all processing on-device.
Comet’s posture is different, and it’s on the record. CEO Aravind Srinivas said publicly, in a TBPN podcast, that building a browser gives Perplexity the ability to “get data even outside the app to better understand you” - with plans to build user profiles for targeted advertising. The Tuta privacy analysis that circulated this quote described the model as structurally identical to Google Chrome’s data collection. There’s also a documented security incident: Researchers at LayerX Security identified a malicious attack vector which they call CometJacking. The exploit could possibly exfiltrate a user’s personal sensitive data to a remote server controlled by the attacker. LayerX attempted to responsibly disclose their findings to Comet’s developer Perplexity AI in August 2025.
That doesn’t make Comet unusable (most Chromium browsers collect similar telemetry) but it does explain the round. A reader who cares about ad profiling has a materially better paper trail with Dia today.
